David and Music in the Bible
From Lyre to Throne: David and Music in the Bible
Young DAVID is a 5-part animated mini-series and a prequel to DAVID, a full-length feature film set to release in 2025. The series by Slingshot Productions in partnership with Angel Studios explores the formative years of legendary King David. Delve into his humble beginnings as a shepherd, his love for playing the lyre and composing poetry, his fateful encounter with the king’s shepherd, and his daring race to save his sheep from a fearsome lion. This heartwarming tale reveals the makings of a future king, long before he faced any giants or ascended the throne.
Young DAVID emphasizes David’s love of music and poetry, and features two original songs called “23” and “Rhythm of Grace.” David’s talent of weaving music into his worship is a key storytelling element in the series.
Was David a Musician?
Music held a significant role in the lives of the Hebrews, particularly in their worship of God. It was featured prominently at coronations, was integral to religious ceremonies, and played a part in warfare.
David was extraordinary as both a musician and a poet, with over half of the psalms attributed to him. As a boy, he was a shepherd, finding inspiration in the landscapes of Bethlehem. Moved by the beauty of natural melodies, he began to play his harp and sing praises to God.
As a young man, David's harp playing was so exceptional that he was recommended to King Saul, who brought him into his service. Whenever Saul was troubled and distressed, David's soothing harp music would calm the king's woes.
David’s love for his lyre is depicted throughout Young DAVID. In Episode 4, “Poet,” David’s father gives him a lyre that had been in their family for generations. He then sets off on an epic adventure to write one of his greatest poems.
David and Composing Poetry
David's divinely inspired works stand out in many respects, featuring a mix of contemplative and pastoral themes. His psalms cover a wide spectrum, from songs of praise and historical recounts to celebrations of grape harvests and the splendor of palace inaugurations. They explore reflections, hope, and heartfelt pleas.
One of his most prominent poems, Psalm 23, inspired the original song “23” from Young DAVID.
Psalm 23:
Jehovah is my Shepherd.
I will lack nothing.
2 In grassy pastures he makes me lie down;
He leads me to well-watered resting-places.
3 He refreshes me.
He leads me in the paths* of righteousness for the sake of his name.
4 Though I walk in the valley of deep shadow,
I fear no harm,
For you are with me;
Your rod and your staff reassure me.
5 You prepare a table for me before my enemies.
You refresh my head with oil;
My cup is well-filled.
6 Surely goodness and loyal love will pursue me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of Jehovah for all my days.
From Scripture to Screen: Young DAVID’s Biblically-Based Songs
There are two original songs from Young DAVID.
As mentioned above, “23” is based on David’s Psalm 23 which is a beautiful narrative about the Lord being his shepherd. After finding himself in an unfamiliar place, David must put his trust in the Lord to guide him home. Enjoy this original song performed by Brandon Engman.
The second song is called “Rhythm of Grace.” When David stumbles upon his sister in his favorite spot to pray and learns she’s overwhelmed, he shows her how he overcomes his hardships: by spending time with God. The future king shares the joyful truth that God can be found and heard wherever we are. Enjoy this original song performed by Brandon Engman.
