During the 2007 Nigerian elections, the International Republican Institute (IRI) needed an easy and efficient way to collect and report polling data. Traditionally, field delegates would record observations in a hand-written notebook. Due to travel and other challenges, that practice resulted in 2-3 day turnaround in reporting, and limited Internet access in remote areas made web an internet-based approach unrealistic. IRI realized that a phone-based survey application was the answer to their problem.
